For centuries London has proudly sat amongst the world’s most stylish and innovative, yet historical cities.

Whether you’re taking in the impressive Georgian architecture used to construct Buckingham Palace, enjoying a walk through the mural jungle that is Shoreditch, or admiring the contemporary styles of Chelsea, the city has something for everyone.

One way for Londoners to express creativity is with their properties. Doors, windows, and conservatories are all highly customisable, opening incredible possibilities to make a house feel like a home.

Bi-fold doors perfectly combine their stunning aesthetics with practicality, seamlessly connecting indoors with outdoors to maximise your living space. This blog will explore bifold doors in more detail, showcasing how they can enhance your London home.

What are bi-fold doors?

Bi-fold doors, or ‘folding doors,’ are made from multiple glass panes, sometimes known as ‘leaves’ placed alongside each other, often as exterior doors to access a garden or patio area.

The leaves move independently, sliding along a track and stacking to one side when open. Bi-fold doors usually have between two and eight leaves and are commonly made from either aluminium or uPVC.

They’ve risen in popularity for a few reasons, such as their ability to allow natural light into your home, which we’ll explore in depth below.

What are the benefits of bi-fold doors?

Natural light intake

Thanks to the expansive glass panes, bi-fold doors are a great option if you’d like to enable natural light to flow effortlessly into your London home.

Regular exposure to natural light can bring you a host of mental, physical, and even financial benefits.

These include helping your body to produce Vitamin D, reducing levels of stress and anxiety, improving your sleep patterns, minimising eye strain, and being less reliant on artificial lighting.

High security

Exterior doors must be secure from unwelcome intruders, which is certainly the case for bi-fold doors, helping your peace of mind.

At Aim Windows, our bi-fold doors come with the latest multi-point locking systems, meaning they have no weak points or vulnerabilities.

In-demand aesthetic

We’re seeing a rise in minimalist designs across London, no matter if you’re in Croydon, Stratford, Kensington, or Camden.

Aluminium frames are a great way to achieve this simple look.

They offer slim sightlines to allow for much larger panes of glass but are also incredibly strong, so fewer panels are required, opening the space for outdoor views.

Thermal Efficiency

Given the soaring living costs, households across London will no doubt be exploring ways they can reduce their outgoings.

Thankfully bi-fold doors have incredible energy efficiency, meaning they effectively retain heat when you need it in the colder winter months, but also work to repel it when unwelcome during the summer. At Aim Windows, our exceptional bi-fold doors achieve U-values of up to 1.5w/m2k.

This can result in cheaper energy bills, as homeowners become less dependent on costly appliances like radiators and cooling systems.

This is largely thanks to the high performance double glazing installed as standard – though if you’d like to increase your home’s energy efficiency even further, triple glazing is available from Aim Windows.

Added Property Value

Given the high demand in London for minimalist aesthetics, thermal efficiency, and incredible security, bifold door installations can significantly increase your property’s value.

This ensures they are more of an investment into your living space than an upfront cost, setting you up for a potential financial windfall should you ever wish to sell.

Therefore, bi-fold doors are an excellent choice from a financial standpoint and an enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing one.

What materials do bi-fold doors come in?

Aluminium

At Aim Windows, we highly recommend installing bi-fold doors with aluminium. This is for a few reasons, with the first being its durability. Aluminium is known for being incredibly strong and durable, in most cases lasting up to 40 years, making it a long-term purchase.

Aluminium also requires very little in the way of maintenance. Usually, a quick wipe with a damp cloth will be enough to keep it looking as good as new.

The aesthetic is also incredibly desirable, with the slim sightlines offering a contemporary feel.

uPVC

Bi-fold doors are also available in uPVC, though they aren’t as high standard as aluminium.

The frames are bulkier, meaning you won’t get the same panoramic views, or be able to open them as easily.

uPVC is also less resistant to weathering than aluminium, and can be heavily impacted by the rain, but is equally vulnerable to cracking in the heat.
